When I build a Pentium 4-powered Windows 98 rig for a friend, I got a little jealous of it´s performance and decided to start building one for myself, too.

I needed a suitable case and found a gutted Meisaku Business case, which modified for better airflow (I may have exaggerated a bit...). I also ground and painted it, the metal frame included, just for fun.

I wanted to try a little more finalized cable management than I typically do. However, these old cases are not manufactured with cable management in mind, so I had to get imaginative.

I think it turned out nicely.

I like the case, looks very tidy. I guess it has excellent airflow with those Noctua fans. The wavy grille pattern on the front and the side kinda reminds me of the Windows logo. And yeah, I know the feeling of wanting "just a bit more" performance, which then leads to an entirely new build. 😁

BTW, what kind of monitor will you be using for this system?

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Yeah, the air flows quite nicely 😁 It would flow even better if I´d block the ventilation holes on the side-panels and get the I/O panel in its place, this would help pressurizing the case. My screen is a 20" 4:3 LG Flatron LC2000C. And yes, I would just love a good CRT but atm whis will do just fine.

Very nice! It displays 1600x1200 natively, right? That was the premium resolution for Win9x gaming back in the day, and it's a great fit for a powerful system like that.

I have a 17" CRT and they are indeed awesome. But keeping it in good working condition is proving to be a challenge, since very few people actually know how to service them, at least where I live.

I like the rubber strip around the hole cut for the front fan. Gives it a much less case hack feel and more professional, not something I'm very good at.
Love the cable management tape, that's more my style, zip ties and tape can fix everything 😉
Always impressed with your builds the hardware is well thought out and built to a high standard.

What brand is the fan controller? I prefer the simple ones as only really use them for keeping eye on temps on older PC's with no probes of their own (and to fill out drive bays with missing covers) This looks like a good choice for beige boxes

if it was for myself with those specs i'm not sure i could have stayed with win98, i'd have been tempted to win xp maybe with a partition for 98

it is, as you say, fairly top end for 32 bit era and very nicely done, will play just about any game that works on 98 for sure

Pentium 4 computers running Windows 98 was something realistic and it was supported until 2006. People initially didn't like Windows XP which was quite amusing. 😉

Yeah, some folks got turned off by the default "Fisher Price" theme which made the OS look like a "kid's toy" in their words. Of course, you can change that in just a couple of clicks, but first impressions do count, I suppose. There were also some stability concerns with the retail version of WinXP. Most of those got sorted out by SP1, but it still made some people cautious about upgrading. And by that, I mean upgrading from NT or 2K, not Win98 which wasn't exactly a pinnacle of stability.

Personally, I dual booted Win98 and WinXP until early 2004. Mostly so that I could continue playing DOS games. But around that time, I became aware of DOSBox, so I started using XP exclusively afterwards.

Great work, and I love your YT videos.

Not long ago you were talking in the Orpheus thread about getting one for a DOS/98 build. Is that also still in the works?

DOS/95 build, actually ;D But yes, that´s still in the works but far in the future. I ordered an Orpheus card but they contacted me and said that they´re suffering component shortage. They told me I´m in the waiting list but now I heard they´re no longer producing Orpheus because they have a new product, so I don´t know what´s going on. I´m assuming they´ll let me know, being in the waiting list and all...

Easy way to hide blemishes 😁 The fan controller´s a Lamptron FC5 V2.

Many people feel like this build should serve as an XP rig. I want just to enjoy the games and OS with all the power reserves 😁

I´ve been planning on building a overkill XP build some day, I think I´ll reuse my i7 and GTX770 on that one 😁

Heh, I thought I was the only one who still uses C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS for the installation folder. 😀

And yeah, mid-2000 era fans are sometimes way too loud compared to modern cooling solutions. One of the reasons I went with an Athlon64 system was because current AMD coolers still fit on those.

I always assumed that´s the correct path since I´ve seen so many people using it...? Or does it make a difference?

Yeah, it´s pretty neat how the same coolers can be used between old and new AMD processors. I wish Intel had the same approach.

If I remember correctly, C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS is what most OEM vendors were using back in the day. For that reason, I also consider it to be the traditional path.

But I've rarely seen it being shown by YouTubers. Phil uses something like C:\WIN98 or some such in his videos. I doubt it makes much of a difference anyway. To me, it simply feels neater to have the files in the traditional OEM approved location instead of some random folder on the C: drive. 😁

Very nice build! It's super clean. I don't think the install path matters much. You can use whatever path you want as long as the installer works correctly.

Great photography by the way. These are some really excellent retro photos!
