My grandparents opened up a radio and TV shop with repair shop in 1978. During the years up to 2005 when they closed shop to retire my grandfather had a whole bunch of microfiches and binders with electronics schematics.
In 2002 he bought a laptop computer to use in the workshop to get the new files and see them on it.

This is the computer. He bought an Amitech FreeNote 4407 (and I think my mother had one exactly like that) which is a Danish brand of electronics from 1985 which sold anything from DVD players, MP3 players to home sound systems and TVs - as well as both desktop and laptop computers. In 2002 they had a profit of DKK 8 million (little over a million USD at the time) and in 2005 they sold 6,000 flat screen tvs. When they ceased making desktop PCs on 2006 they had 42 employees, so definitely not a big company. The company closed down in 2009, but the storage and name was bought and desktops returned got a short period.

We aren't talking about the Bang & Olufsen of laptops here - in fact we are talking about a rebadge of a cheap Taiwanese laptop called Mitac MiNote 7521C - it is also available with a Medion (German brand) and Packard Bell sticker on - as well as some others. It feels cheap, the battery lock isn't working - by now the battery isn't working, but I never remember it to be very good.

It has a 1.3 GHz Intel Celeron Tualatin QS, 256 MB of SDRAM, DVD-drive and 3.5" floppy disk drive. Originally it came with an IDE hard drive but I have swapped this out with an adapter for mSATA drives which I bought a 64 GB Trancend for.
The palm rest boasts with being designed for Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Me but was delivered with Windows XP Home. I know that XP only require 233 MHz and 64 MB RAM as minimum requirements but I honestly found it way to slow and decided to install Windows 2000 instead, this did turn out to be a bit of a hazzle as all the SiS630 drivers I found would make Windows 2000 crash, however neither in XP nor Window 98 did I expirence any trouble and decided to go for Windows Me instead. This also turned out to be done without any trouble.

Frankly this is not a computer that I would say I am in any way happy about or proud of - but it does hold a certain personal value to me as it was my grandfather's computer.
A few years ago he asked me if I wanted to have it since he hadn't turned it on for years. He gave it to me in his laptop bag which is way too big for it (lots of rooms for documents) and inside the bag was also the Recovery discs, StarOffice 5.2 (for multiple platforms), the user manual, welcome letter anti virus license card and a D-Link (if I remember correctly) USB WiFi adapter which I don't know where is anymore - this laptop is not going online anyway... With this I've added my Microsoft Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 6000 which I won at a tech fair in the late 2000s - it matches the computer very well.
The desktop wallpaper is from the original XP OEM installation; there are 10 different Amitech flavors to choose from.

I don't think that it will be worth it to buy a new stick of 512 MB SDRAM to upgrade it although there are some new available in my local shop.

I installed the included StarOffice, but one thing that I had to install was one of my favorite screensavers as a child: Johnny Castaway. It does run in a small screen on this computer though:

I also installed another screensaver I had laying around on floppy disk; an advertisement disk from Maxell and a local computer store - the disk is off course a Maxell floppy
