Nice collections of computers you have. It was not that long ago that the Cosmos computer case was the Ultimate case everyone wanted.

Thanks! 😀

The Cosmos II's an awesome, extremely solidly built case, but cases have definitely evolved beyond this over the years! (I still love it though!)

Here are some system benchmarks:

Blender 2.75 (test.blend render time): (I kind of expected more from this CPU, to be honest!)

Very interestingly, My Dual P4 XEON fitted with a TITAN X achieved a better score in this DX11 Benchmark!!!

Would you mind using the image upload feature? I can't click your images, and browser scaling f*cks it up, so it's unreadable ...

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

What type of system and browser are you using?

If you right click on the image and select to view it in a new tab, then you should be able to view it perfectly.

The images scale perfectly in Safari.

Here are the system's specs as seen by CPU and GPU-Z: (It is unbelievably warm here right now, hence the relatively high CPU temps)

Very nice! Was it actually worth the upgrade from 980x to 990x? I assume they're both unlocked?

It certainly wasn’t at the time of its release, as the 980x and 990x are identical feature wise, but the 990x just runs 130MHz faster.

Seeng that the 990x is so cheap today, it’s worth getting just for the purpose of maxing out the board.

Ah, I misunderstood, then. I had the understanding that you had upgraded from 980 to 990 back in the day 🤣 Today, stille the price difference is something, though (I've been searching up a 970 just to get hexa-core on an X58 board)

The 990x was released at a retail price of $1100 a short time after I purchased my 980x. The 980x had already cost me $1000, so it made absolutely no sense for me to upgrade to the 990x at that time!

I did a similar thing with an i7 860 a couple of five years ago. In 2008 I got a AM2 dual core PC for my birthday but by 2010 I was struggling in a few games so I spent my own money on a PC for the first time. It was a huge upgrade going from an Athlon x2 5200+ slow dual core with 3GB RAM to a 2.9GHz 4c4t CPU with 8GB of RAM. I really liked that PC so in 2019 I bought a similar set of parts and found it surprisingly useful, and then a few years later re-checked to see if the CPU could still run stuff. The 2022 thread here with a link to the older one too: I don't need to upgrade, the sequel - Gaming on a 13 year old platform

The main issue I found was lack of instruction sets. 16GB of RAM was fine, modern GPUs (at the time) were fine, Windows 10 worked fine. I used it as my main PC for a week or two.

Ryzen 3700X | 16GB 3600MHz RAM | AMD 6800XT | 2Tb NVME SSD | Windows 10
AMD DX2-80 | 16MB RAM | STB LIghtspeed 128 | AWE32 CT3910
I have a vacancy for a main Windows 98 PC

I still use a similar system as my daily driver.
I found the mainboard in a trash pile in the street. Asus Sabertooth X58. It came with an I7-950
I bought a cheap Xeon X5650 (6c/12t for less than 20€) and overclocked it to 4.1GHz from 2.66.
Maxed out the RAM at 24G and spent 2xx€ for a GTX960 in 2015. 2 SSD (sata unfortunately) and Linux Mint. (I use Linux since 2005 for non retro activities)

I don't, game on it anymore as I have a Steam Deck now (Linux included). But it cost me almost nothing and i used it for games for around 6y (Steam Linux, Lutris, PlayOnLinux, Wine/Proton)

I have the parts to restore it to a period correct setup after I stop using it (I7 extreme, good RAM, dual GTX295, Killer Nic, X-Fi titanium fatality and four (!!) 300GB raptors)

"Hello, my friend. Stay awhile and listen..."
My collection (not up to date)

Towards the end of this systems upgrade path, it was fitted with a Creative X-fi Extreme Gamer Fatality Pro, 24GB of Corsair Dominator RAM and an Nvidia GTX TITAN X. (The Creative X-fi Extreme Gamer Fatality Pro and an Nvidia GTX TITAN X are currently fitted in my Dual P4 XEON.)

So I've de-modded it back to its initial build status (Also dismantled it completely to give the case a thorough clean) and will end up replacing the OCZ Revodrive 3 X2 with an OCZ Z-Drive (Doubling its hard drive throughput), fitting it with the Asus Xonar Essence STX PCI-e 124dB SNR Hi-Fi Audiophile Sound Card, as it's more fitting and more period correct, and finally replacing the 980x with a 990x.

In its current configuration, this system's more than adequate to serve as a daily driver. (It's obviously no good for modern day gaming, and that's ok with me!)
