Longbow 2

Was trying to get 0.08 and 0.09a1 working with Longbow 2. The main screen comes up OK but gets the following error when trying to fly...

ChoosePixelFormat() failed: Cannot find a suitable pixel format

Tried to play around with different options in the INI-file but no go. Any ideas? Have anyone succesfully used this with Longbow 2 and a GeForce card (I'm using a GF2 GTS with nVidias 28.32 drivers)?

Thanks in advance,

/Christer (a.k.a KeyCat)

As far as I know, no one has yet made longbow 2 or Hind work. But I hadn't before seen that it was ChoosePixelFormat that failed. That's interesting.

Well, that's weird. Longbow 2 allegedly worked with Creative's Unified Glide wrapper (v1.16), and possibly even ye olde XGL200 (by Scott Cutler, now of NVIDIA).

Hmm... Did Craig send you Longbow 2, Paul?

Acctually after I wrote the message I tested it in XP (first test was done in Windows 98 SE) and there it worked but I couldn't get any sound but thats an issue with my soundcard driver.

Could it be a DirectX thing? XP running DX 9.0a and Win 98 running DX 8.0a...

Also I can confirm what Schadenfreude says about Creatives Unified Glide wrapper 1.16. That wrapper works with Longbow 2.

It's an issue with everyone using 3dfx Longbow 2 + XP...

Maybe...
Try lowering your sound acceleration one notch at a time using DXDIAG, then retrying Longbow 2 in XP. Keep lowering until it starts working. If it does start working that way, let us know.

It's possible there might be an ACT 3.0 patch that could fix this, but I'm not an ACT (Application Compatibility Toolkit) guru.

Really? In Windows XP? Cool!

Now that you have it working with OpenGlide (sorta), could you take some screenshots? Also some Unified screenshots? (and upload them somewhere)

BTW - found you, even though I cannot read Swedish.

I'm probably just misremembering. What about Hind? Anybody know of anything that works with Hind?

Not that I've seen.

You could always try different wrappers out, Glidos. Perhaps one will do *something* and that will be enough for you to figure out how it does it and fix it in OpenGlide.

Current "Modern" wrappers:
eVoodoo, OpenGlide, Zeckensack's, and DGVoodoo
All are pretty advanced and compatible.

Older wrappers (alphabetical):
BigRRed, Boost Wrapper, Clide, DirectGlide, GL2Ideal, Glid3D, GlideGL64, MGlide, MUGlide, Unified, XGL200, X-Glide
Most advanced: MGlide, Unified, XGL200
Most compatible: MGlide, Unified, XGL200

If one of them does something and the wrapper is not open-source, talk to Stiletto. He can likely track down the author.

One of these days I'll stage an all-out war between them, but I need a lot more Glide games and a lot more video cards for true compatibility testing, plus a newer system and an older OS. 😜

But, more likely, this will require more reverse-engineering of HIND. Do you have IDA Pro and know how to use it? It will come in handy.

There's still a valid support issue here - why did Longbow 2 work with OpenGlide in WinXP but not Win98?
