I've tried to install these but even the install will not work. It says something about a too long filename and quits the install process.

Well, they're both Windows games so there shouldn't be "long filename" errors unless you shut off the Windows 9x LongFilename support.
Have you tried running the setup/install programs in Compatibility mode?
