I finally got myself a MT-32 on ebay.

Now I'm trying to sort all the input I got on ways to connect it to my PC.

After reading this forum, as well as others and also talking to some people it boils down to 2 option:

1. A USB2MIDI interface:
Roland UM-1EX (~35€)
http://www.roland.com/products/en/UM-1EX/index.html

2. A new/additional Soundcard:
M-AUDIO DELTA AUDIOPHILE 2496 (85€)
http://www.thomann.de/gb/m-audio_delta_audiophile_2496.htm
ESI JULI@ (119€)
http://www.thomann.de/gb/esi_juliat.htm

So my question is:
Just for the Midi-out to the MT-32:
Is a PCI card worth the extra money or is the USB interface fine??
(also is a roland interface better?)

Thx a lot

I know this post is old but maybe you've come back to look at it recently.

A USB interface is fine, it will route all the MT32 specific MT32 SYSEX's just fine when playing MT32 MIDI files within Windows and for those older Sierra games that have some wierd issues you can use the latest builds of DOSBox which can be set to emulate the SMART mode of the real MPU401.

This actually helps me a lot, so even if the original poster doesn't come back to read it, take pride in the fact that you've helped at least one person with this.

I see, interesting. Would you be as kind to try the MT-32 with Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe to see if it shows any buffer overflow exceptions?! For me, using my crappy midi interface thingy, it requires a huge midi-transfer-delay-setting using dvwjr's special build to work properly. Using a standard DOSBox build, it overflows just instantly, resulting in a rather 'funky' introduction melody 😜

Okay, so I am playing Speedball II right now and I did get the Exec. Buffer Overflow error but the music still played just fine as did the effects. That's the first time I've ever seen that error on my MT-32's LCD. Oh man is Speedball II's MT32 sound weird when compared with the true Amiga version. *BOINK*

I have the same MIDI USB interface, but I don't know how to configure DOSBox to hand the incoming MIDI messages to the software I am using. Please, if anyone could be of any help, I have posted recently about this subject.
