I'm trying to make MT32 sound work with Secret of the Monkey Island (VGA floppy version) in DOSbox. The MT32 emulation works beautifully with SotMI-2 (similarly, VGA floppy version) but in SotMI-1 I can only get PC speaker emulation and SB emulation to work, not MT32. If I turn off both PC speaker and SB but leave MPU-401 set to "mt32" in dosbox.conf I get no sound, whereas if I do the same in SotMI-2 I get MT32 sound.

Has anyone noticed this? Is there a solution? SotMI does not have an option to configure sound, it's supposed to detect and use what's available. And I know it works with a real MT32 module.
