MT-32 format soundfont

Postby code120 » 2012-11-23 @ 09:10

Hi, I made a soundfont that uses MT-32's standard, so that one can run in standard DOSBox (without MUNT) games that support the MT-32 and not the GM, and get good sounds. Only problem is that you don't get the sound effects (just instruments), but it works well for games like Wizardry 7 or Realms of Arkania 1, and in general for games where you can choose a 2nd card for effects.

The instruments are taken almost entirely from Emu's 8MBGM soundfont, with some missing samples taken from the A320U.sf2 that I found on the TiMidity++ installer, and that had a MT-32 bank. Now, I'd post a link if somebody is interested and if somebody tells me if it's legal (I'm wondering about the 8MBGM).

Nice initiative! Very useful to make AWE-cards MT-32 compatible. Of course it won't sound like an MT-32 at all, but neither did the Ultrasound's Mega-Em :) For newer computers, this soundfont is of course unnecessary, since we have Munt!

I don't need this soundfont, since i have a first-gen MT-32 connected to my pc, and MUNT installed on my laptop, but i'm still curious how it sounds. So please, upload it ;) (I think the old Emu soundfonts are public domain now)

This is the soundfont:

To my ears it works rather well for many games that use MT32, except for Sierra games. I don't really know what ScummVM does to make the sound good with normal non-MT32 soundfonts.

Also, for example in Realms of Arkania 1, in the first town song the instrument 'Music Box' that plays well with MUNT doesn't with default midi (it plays so quietly that isn't audible, even if it's there). I tried recording the midi with ctrl+alt+f8, both with MUNT and default midi, but the instrument plays very quiet anyway, when I listen the midi capture in Windows (with Qsynth or Timidity doesn't make a difference).

Well, i'm surprised..I've had a listen and although it doesn't even come close to the sound of a MT-32, all the instruments are there and it's actually listenable! For people with a slow computer, that can't run Munt, this is an ideal solution :) It sounds good even without the MT-32 sounds. I have tested it with Kings Quest IV and Dune btw, since they use no SysEx ;)

I tried with KQ4 but it's a pain, the same with all Sierra games, the correct instruments aren't played.

Hmm, actually, I'm not surprised... Looking at the list of MT-32 compatible games, those using the standard set of patches are rare. Not taking into account FX, as you already noted. That's why CC started mt32emu (now munt) long ago :)

Well, I tried going this way in 2011 too. It appears, you need to create a dedicated mapping (using things like mt32toGM, MIDI-OX, etc.) for about every game.

There is this guy called Corak, from https://www.old-games.ru forum.

He says he did a MT-32 sf2 for General Midi support. (a little bit of MT-32 flavor, for General Midi configuration)

it's 15MB

"it turned out quite well.
Here is my work: "
