Hello!

I decided to open a topic here because I have spent hours trying to make things work without success.

My intention is to install (correctly) the latest version of Munt on my W7 64-bit system and use it to play the music (and sound?) in the gog version of Wing Commander.

For starters, I downloaded the latest version here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/munt/

I had the same exact problem noted by another user here:
MUNT Installation

meaning that I had to remove one of the 10 midi port entries to make space for Munt. After doing that, the installer completed its task and I could now select "MT32 Synth Emulator" as Default MIDI Synth using the BASSMIDI driver configurator (http://kode54.net/bassmididrv/)

From the Munt: MT-32 Emulator I chose Options -> Rom Configuration and select the folder where MT32_CONTROL.ROM and MT32_PCM.ROM can be found.

From Tools, I choose Play MIDI file to test the driver is working as intended and it seems it does. Some MIDI files do not play right though (they do not produce any sound at all or are completely out of tune): I guess they are too "advanced" for the MT-32 emulator and use things like Program Changes to alter pitch, volume and other parameters.

Now to the real reason for my use of Munt: I can't bear the awful quality of the Soundblaster music when running the Wing Commander game (bought at Good Old Games).

The problem is: I do not seem to make DosBox sound any better even after I made sure that my default MIDI device is MT32 Synth Emulator. The music played is still the awful Soundblaster.

I read that DosBox 0.74 does not support directly the MT-32 soundcard.

I have then found a very useful page here: http://www.gogwiki.com/wiki/DOSBox

but even after following their advice, I find myself at start point. I suspect this might happen because the GOG version of this game has the soundblaster card preset and the user cannot change it to MT-32 running the "Install.exe" file that would normally be in the DOS original version.

After searching more, it seems that there is a file called WINGCMDR.CFG that comes with the game. One user (here: http://www.simon-dufour.com/blog/2012/09/wing … t-32-emulation/) says that it's enough to change the soundblaster parameter with "R" to finally make the music play as it should.

But when I do that, the DosBox emulation sort of hangs (no error messages but it doesn't go anywhere, the cursor blinking under "Expanded Memory Detected". 🙁

Any advice?

Thanks!

Doubtful. Examples?

Hi Kaminari Redux!

I have uploaded one MIDI with an instrument not playing at all (Square Wave) when played using the latest MT-32 Synth Emulator driver here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9_1X7K5KtOcM … dit?usp=sharing

On the bright side of my predicament, I am very glad to report that I can now play the GOG version of Wing Commander 1 on DosBox (I use Taewoong's latest build for that) with MT-32 emulation without any issue. It was enough to change one parameter in the WINGCMDR.CFG file: "a904" should be changed with "R". The reason it didn't work for me before was a bad dump of the Wing Commander 1 game for DOS which I thought I'd rather use instead of trying to mess with the GOG version.

A much better test MIDI file (one that's actually MT32 compatible) would be the one provided here. The video shows what it should sound like, and there's a download link in the video description (along with a GM version).

Yes WC1 GOG.com version is missing the INSTALL (or was it SETUP) to change the sound card. You can "nick" it from other versions if you want 😀
