I was poking around ebay, looking for some parts for another project, and decided on a whim to price check Roland MT-32, CM-32L, and SC-55s.

The MT-32s still run around $140 or more (most are in japan), all I could find CM-32L-wise was AC adapters, and the SC-55 mk2s average about $100.

Any advantage to using the REAL hardware, versus just using MUNT with the old and new MT-32 roms (and CM-32L/CM-64), or the SC-55 soundfont in Bass Midi?

I'm not going to compose music on it, just play old games in DOSBox and ScummVM.

MT-32s are usually $40 to $60 on Craigslist. Same applies to SC-55(MKII) modules. Even on eBay you can get cheap modules. Modules pop up on www.amibay.com, www.vintage-computer.com and www.queststudios.com from time to time as well.

I use both the real hardware and MUNT. For convenience sake, MUNT is superior especially for use on laptops on the go. Right now, I'm away from home, but I still enjoy MT-32 music with Dosbox in my laptop.

As the time passes, sound quality of real units degrades. On the contrary, sound quality of munt improves. 😀
