DOSbox.conf not saving

Hey, I am a newbie to DOSbox, so its fair to say I am clueless. I looked up a few guides to get a little know how and it helped slightly. I recently downloaded The Elder Scrolls: Arena (free version) and it was getting terrible FPS, so I increased the CPU cycles to 50000, giving me 11% CPU usage and running Arena smoothly, but it wouldn't stay that way when I loaded DOSbox up.

I was told to look for dosbox.conf but couldn't find it. So I opened DOSbox and used the "config -writeconfig configfile" command and it appeared in the DOSbox folder, so I changed the cycles, fullscreen and other stuff and saved using NotePad. I loaded up DOSbox but the changes were not saved. I have done this multiple times and still nothing.

What am I doing wrong?

Look in the Start Menu > All Programs > DOSBox-0.73 > Configuration

Thanks. I got it to save the changes, I didn't realize it was so simple 😅

I have another question relating to dosbox.conf. When I load up Arena, the text at the beginning and in game is very blurred and pixelly. I don't know how to fix it, but I have seen many peoples videos on youtube showing how to setup Arena and theirs is perfectly readable. Is there are setting I can change?

I was thinking it could be my screen being to big, its 24' and 1920x1080 native resolution, would this cause stretching and blurriness?

Are you running the game in full-screen mode? Or window'ed mode?

I suggest you try to run it in window'ed mode, maybe using something like the hq3x scaler. And maybe force that scaler to be used.

If the game is 320x200 then obviously pixels need to be interpolated to fill the 1920x1080 screen. If you want "blocky" interpolation, use output=openglnb or scaler=normal3x.

I tried both suggestions, and it actually makes it more blurred. In game everything is fine, its just the text and pictures that can be very hard to make out.

Everything on DOSbox.conf is default with the only changes being. memsize=32, Aspect=True, Scaler=normal3x, output=openglnb and CPUcycles=40000.

for the sake of testing try disabling aspect correction
and instead of normal3x user scaler=none
and set fullresolution and windowresolution to 1920x1080

and check in the dosbox status window whether there are no messages about not allowing openglnb output and switching to something else.

Please excuse the late reply, we have been moving house and have been without internet for a few weeks. I am happy to report using Qbix's suggestions it is finally running beautifully, but I still have a few issues, they seem unrelated to my previous ones, maybe you can help.

Whenever I play in fullscreen on Arena when I walk through a door or talk to someone, the loading text suddenly slows down, and step by step builds up using multicoloured pixels, the music also starts jumping and skipping, the only way to fix it is by going into windowed mode, but it only serves to speed it up slightly, and the same issues appear everytime text or a new interior or exterior cell loads. Any suggestions?
