The OS is Vista on a fairly new computer. I'm brand new to DOS and DOSBox but I know my way around a computer. I have read the readme file.

The problem is that the config file that I edit through the CONFIG command in DOSBox (saved as dosbox.conf) is not the same config file that opens when I go to Start>All Programs>DOSBox-0.73>Configuration>Edit Configuration. The file that I edit through the CONFIG command actually has an effect (I set my cpu cycles to 20000 and everything works). The problem is that I can't figure out how to use the config command to set the autoexec section to automatically mount my dos games folder.

When I follow the readme's advice and edit it manually by going through the start menu, it takes me to a file located at C:\Users\AppData\Local\DOSBox\dosbox-0.73.conf, which is obviously not what I named the config file, and which does not have any effect on DOSBox. I've tried editing the autoexec section, the cpu cycles, and the frameskip and DOSBox does not reflect any of these changes. Furthermore, Windows can't find any file called "dosbox.conf".

Can anyone help clear up what is going on here, and how I can automatically mount my drive?

The console (the second window that opens when you run Dosbox), tells you where the conf file is located that Dosbox uses. I'd suggest, delete that and then only use the one which is linked to in the Startmenu

Yes, that is a problem, because THAT IS NOT possible.

When I run DOSBox the only thing it shows me is the blue welcome box and the line Z:\>SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 T6. What command can I use to either delete the current config file or locate it? Uninstalling and reinstalling does not clear the config file.

The *other* window.

unless you edited the shortcut to Dosbox with the -noconsole. If you did you should know what to do now 😀

Which would be kind of pointless since 0.73 installs 3 short-cuts in the Start-menu: A normal, and a (noconsole) variant.

bstriegs - how are you launching DOSBox?

Oops (since I switched to Mac I seem to have forgotten how my startmenu looked after installing 0.73 😀)

I launch DOSBox via the shortcut on my desktop. I tried the links from the start menu and they load the same config settings. The DOSBox status window says "CONFIG:Loading primary settings from config file dosbox.conf", which still doesn't help since I can't find the dosbox.conf file anywhere on my hard drive. It doesn't appear to be in any of the user documents folders (hidden folders included), and there's no other folder in the DOSBox program directory besides "zmbv".

Open a CMD window, and type

C:
cd \
dir /s /b | findstr dosbox.conf

Aha! It was located at C:\Users\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\DOSBox-0.73\dosbox.conf. I've edited the autoexec section of this file and everything mounts perfectly. Thanks to everyone for the help!

Also, should I file this as a bug report somewhere? It seems wrong that the start menu shortcut to edit the config file would take you to the wrong config file.

no just delete C:\Users\Ben\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\DOSBox-0.73\dosbox.conf
and use the links in the start menu

If I had my W7 tablet ready, I would have given that path to look for. That is the path that Vista/W7 save files in that are supposed to go into a program files subfolder but can't be saved in the actual folder when the user is not admin. Actualy a very handy feature of Vista/W7 😀

Then it's like Dominus said and Qbix's hint will resolve it.
