Hi there.

I got a little problem with the DOSBox.

In my opinion the program is a litte bit too restrictive concerning the audio playback, otherwise being a wounderfull and unbeatable way to replay dear old DOS games.

But the fact is, it seems to me, that I don’t have the choice to tell an old game, how to play the sound.
DOSBox seems to override any input by the sound setup of the game I want to play.

In the DOS era, the game was installed and then the sound device was chosen. In many newer DOS games you had to chose two different “Sounddevices”, one to play the music and the other one to play the effects and speech. This, in fact, is still done in DOSBox, when you install a DOS game.
Now my problem is, that in some games, I intended to record just the background music for I liked it most, which doesn’t seem to be possible. If make my settings in the sound setup of the game and tell it not to play the effects and start the game, I always got the effects anyway.

Since now, I haven’t found a way to tell DOS Box, that only the settings I have made in the game’s sound setup itself are to be taken, no matter what DOSBox ‘thinks’ it should do.

Can anybody help?

It's not an issue of dosbox but faulty memory of how old games worked 😉
Dosbox gives you the emulation of the sound device nothing more.

In what specific games are you observing this problem?

I assure you that DOSBox is not trying to be smart about which type of sound to use, and is only doing what the game software tells it to do. Some games may not offer a way to disable sound effects, falling back on speaker if you don't select SB for example.

You have the option of using DOSBox's MIXER command to reduce the volume of specific sound devices to zero, which I think may be the solution you're looking for.

Oh and if you can't record everything in Dosbox it is likely due to device being a midi device and those are passed through to the hosts midi device. Hence dosbox can't record it.

I merged the two topics but they got pretty scrambled. I don't know why...

Thanks folks, but since now i was recording via Music Editor Free and it worked pretty well, except those two games till now.

And still one question remains. How do I decrease the soundblaster output to zero while keeping the music output unharmed?
Can I do it ingame or what option do I have to change in the dosbox config. I'm a little confused.

Use the command "MIXER SB 0:0" in DOSBox.

BTW, please use the "re:" button when replying.
