Guys, I must say that OPL3 emulation on DOSBox is the closest emulation on the opl3 chip.
Is there a WAY to use the audio engine emulation to play with a MIDI keyboard?
Is there any synth that works with DOSBox that can be played with a MIDI keyboard?

Sorry if it already discussed, but I've been looking this for so long, and I couldn't get with the right PC to make my PCI opl3 based card work.

I installed Windows 95 in Dosbox just to be able to record Age of Empires MIDI music synthesized by OPL - just the way I remember it 😁 . The same could work for you.

Windows 3.x also works, but I don't remember if it sounded exactly the same.

Bit of a necropost but you might wanna check this thread out:
Windows, Doom, Apogee OPL3 Synthesizer. (khokh2001 made the initial base, though I have a fork later in the thread with fixes/enhancements to MIDI support)

Additionally there is also this VSTi you may be interested in.

All of these use the DOSbox opl3 engine and therefore also all distributed under LGPL
