I cannot get the make directory command work. Am I missing something?

Both should work.
Could be permissions, mounting (incl. drive type), wrong working directory (if in a batch file), etc... more details would help.

Yeah, sorry, both should work.

You have to give us your whole chain of commands in dosbox including mountings..
