i have a compaq 2800++ amb onboard video/sound 512 meg 2.08 gig winxp home machine, and i can run games GREAT with dosbox. but, i gotta problem. every minute or so, the colors suddenly flash to like 8 colors only and i have to alt-tab out to desktop and back in to get the colors right. then, every minute or so, the same alt-tab trick to get the screen back. this is the first part of my my dosbox.conf:

i dunno what the problem is. if i don't keep the output=surface o get like 3 fps. right now i gotta keep it from going too fast.

one thing i had never thot to try. i edited and re-edited and re-re-edited my dosbox.conf but cutting back on the bells and whistles in the background never entered my mind. thank you- that was it. i cut back on 90% of the junk and the game played great with nary a drop in color. later i shall experiment upon the offending app.
