Indications are good that Qbix intends to release a new official version at some point. Nobody knows when that will be, however.

In the meantime, you can try a CVS build (see my sig for a link) and help test new features and fixes that have been added since 0.63.

Well...I wouldn't assign the words "beta" or "stable" or "unstable" to getting the latest CVS.

DosBox is constantly being worked upon and tested so if anything DosBox 0.63 would be considered "beta" and "unstable" while the current CVS would be less "beta" and less "unstable". heh.

But you cannot really assign those terms. I can say with all of the testing we have done that the latest CVS is far more compatible and far more "stable" than DosBox 0.63. 😀 (But of course it's not an official release so there's always the chance that it may be more "unstable" than 0.63 in certain areas).

Qbix seems to be extremely careful about testing features and fixes before committing them to CVS, and when he's even the slightest bit unsure of a fix he will ask the beta testers to pay special attention to it. As a result, the CVS seems to be extremely stable.

It's also worth mentioning that every release version of DOSBox was/is just a CVS version that was tested extra thoroughly and released as "official". This means (ideally) that it is extremely stable and has noteworthy fixes and features since the last release, and also provides the community with a common reference point for testing bugs and other issues. However, this doesn't change the fact that it will go out of date as soon as the devs check in another CVS change...

Would be nice if there was some kindof cvs features list page on the main site. Sometimes you just want to know whats been added rather than download a new version of the cvs.

Click on the CVS info link in my signature and look for the ChangeLog links under the Useful Links section. I think the first one lists everything back to 0.63, while the other goes even farther back.

Yes but rather than having to go through 3-5 sites just to see a list of new features in the cvs when you could just have a list on the main dosbox site was my point.

The changelog is one list that shows all changes. The reason there are two links is because two different people are making the same changelog available to people.

The main DOSBox site doesn't mention much (if anything) about CVS builds because I think Qbix would ideally like to have most people use the official versions to avoid confusion. Unfortunately (in my opinion) it has been so long since 0.63 that many problems being reported have already been fixed in CVS...

You have to realize we are human beings and not robots.

So instead of reading a 50k worth of changes...twice...to the effect of "src/gui/render.cpp: Whoooooops : )", can't someone just summarize the important things and tell us "the CVS has added this and that". All we ask for is 5-10 lines of exciting stuff, no less, no more. Thanks.

Important things? 😉

Different things are exciting to different people.

I personally found this:

* src/hardware/vga_memory.cpp: Add "Support for VGA chain4 in
16-color modes" from patch 1302853 created by Vasyl Tsvirkunov.

rather exciting... I doubt most DosBox users would care tho...

But yeah I know what you mean. When Qbix is about to release the latest ver he usually tosses up some info and after he releases the official ver he posts the major changes since the last ver.

Why get people riled up for no reason? That's all we need is another 3Drealms fiasco.

Personally I'd rather the DOSBox devs concentrate on DOSBox development instead of going through the changelogs looking for features to tell people about...

I just updated my copy of the DOSBox CVS source code and found this in the ChangeLog included with it:

0.64
- Fixed FAT writing.
- Added some more missing DOS functions.
- Improved PIC so that it actually honours irq 2/9.
- Improved intelligent MPU 401 mode so that more games work with it.
- Some mouse fixes.
- Changed DMA transfers a bit so they bypass the paging tables.
- Added S3 XGA functionality.
- Improved paging so that read and write faults are handled differently.
- Rewrote exception handling a bit (no exception 0x0B with dos4gw anymore).
- Added IO exceptions in all but the dynamic core.
- Some ems improvements.
- Added midi-device selection code for the windows hosts.
- Fix crashes/segfaults related to the disabling of the pcspeaker.
- Added some more FILES=XX detection tricks.
- Fixed some vga detection schemes.
- Lot's of small bug fixes.
- Fixed screenshot corruption when using -noconsole in a read-only directory.
- Addes some hidden file functions when using diskimages. (helps with cdrom
detection schemes)
- Fixed a bug in the mixer code, that muted the music in certain games.

Erm, now I'm confused. In the CVS tree it says that the last change in the ChangeLog file is from 8 months ago! How can that be?

Now that's what I call a change log 😳 😁

Very nice, I'm really looking forward for it.
