Is there a way to get dosbox to run the x86 code natively, rather than run it in emulation, when the underlying hardware is x86?

No, that's not what DOSBox is about. Use a virtualization product with VT support if that's what you want.

If your running Linux you could always use DosEmu which is more of a Dos virtualiation program moreso than an Emulator as it does not emulate the CPU.
