Is there a way to get dosbox to run the x86 code natively, rather than run it in emulation, when the underlying hardware is x86?

No, that's not what DOSBox is about. Use a virtualization product with VT support if that's what you want.

However, the dynamic core more or less does just that. Sort of.

If your running Linux you could always use DosEmu which is more of a Dos virtualiation program moreso than an Emulator as it does not emulate the CPU.
It comes with FreeDOS installed per default
