I'm googling a lot and I can't find the way to make my Yamaha XG (ymf724f-v chip) use of the OPL3 chip inside.

I'm using Windows XP, and I installed the drivers from the official Yamaha site: http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/lsi/download/

It is now installed a driver called "YAMAHA DX-XG PCI Audio CODEC (WDM)", but I cannot figure out how to use the OPL3 features. I can only use the XG midi sounds.

I'm interested in:
1) Use it through DOSBox. I've downloaded the DOSBox patch version with OPL passthrough, but I don't know how to use it, either if it works on Win XP.

2) Play OPL3 the intrument banks with a MIDI Keyboard connected to the sound card via gameplay<-to->midi cable. But now, I'll prefer to focus my problem on its setup.

Here's the soundcard:

Look that up if it works. Also sound cards are my least repertuar, since i really dont need to watch over them. Until they just lose the volume or just cant play sounds anymore.

Pro Magic carpet player since 2000....

Its all lost now 🙁

That's for Windows 9x.

I tried with Power YMF... There you can enable (?) legacy drivers. Then it asks you to restart XP. "New found hardware" appears asking you to search for the "Yamaha DX XG Legacy Sound System (WDM)". You make it search on the official Yamaha -xp driver- folder, and it returns you an error code 10, which says that the device couldn't start.

Is there anyone here who COULD use the OPL3 chip of YMF7xx on Windows XP?

Freq Monster 801 (http://fm801.kewl.org/app/about) shows that it is possible to use its program on XP by enabling Legacy drivers with Power YMF and using GiveIO.sys

I've been mailing a person who can use it on XP. He told me this:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"https://rapidshare.com/files/830132505/Yamaha DS-XG WinXP Driver.zip

I installed this driver over the built-in XP driver. Rebooted. Installed PowerYMF and added legacy support. It asked to reboot again. Copied porttalk.sys to system32/drivers and added porttalk.reg to registry. Rebooted again. I set gulikoza's DOSBox CVS build to use "hardware" OPL mode. And that's it, I start DOSBox and the FM music is played through the card's real OPL3 chip.

I hope this was helpful."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I installed the XP drivers, they are called with different names than when I install the attached XP driver.

In my case: "Yamaha Native DSI WDM Driver",
and "Yamaha Legacy DSI WDM Driver" but it fails in the end, don't know why. It says that it couldn't start, (error 10).

Then, when I install the attached XP drivers, they are replaced by this new one, called "Yamaha DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC (WDM)".

After that, I activate legacy support with powerYMF and it asks me for the "Yamaha DS-XG Legacy Sound System (WDM)", which I let it found on the attached XP drivers, and it seems to copy the driver files but fails again at the end with the same error code 10.

I've also tried to restore the system (with the antivirus unenabled and in Safe Mode), but it keeps telling me "Restoration incomplete" in any restoration point before installing the drivers for the first time.

Hi

I think that this has something to do with DDMA.

I am certain that when trying to install the legacy
SB driver on an nForce2 mainboard it showed the
exact same error you have with the DS-XG card.

It was a long time ago so I may be incorrect, however, I
have used the legacy mode fine on SiS and Via chipset
mainboards since then.

bye

Answering a dead post, but I was able to get OPL sound working (no XG) with the driver built in to XP installs. Installing the official driver linked above only gave me XG sound.

The driver below is the same as the one built in to XP - for OPL3 (and wave sound) only.
