I'm getting sound stuttering on every game (that's all 8 ) seemingly only during moments when music switches, so mostly when pausing, going through menus, skipping cutscenes and sometimes during the game. Otherwise the sound is good.

I'm using 0.74 and it also happens on ykhwong's build I now use to play Redguard.

That's not terribly helpful. Which 8?

I assumed it did not matter which as all are experiencing the same issue.

There is a lag whenever a track or sound effect switches/plays and occasional pops and stutter during the same track.

auto/max/10000-40000 cycles still produce the problem. I reset to the default settings and it still happened. Is there a way for me to test where the problem is coming from?

DosBox .conf file:

[mixer]
# nosound: Enable silent mode, sound is still emulated though.
# rate: Mixer sample rate, setting any device's rate higher than this will probably lower their sound quality.
# Possible values: 44100, 48000, 32000, 22050, 16000, 11025, 8000, 49716.
# blocksize: Mixer block size, larger blocks might help sound stuttering but sound will also be more lagged.
# Possible values: 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 512, 256.
# prebuffer: How many milliseconds of data to keep on top of the blocksize.

nosound=false
rate=44100
blocksize=1024
prebuffer=20

Alter Blocksize and/or Prebuffer.
If you're using a batch file similar to the one in your other post (affinity 1 and such)...don't. Just run DosBox and the appropriate .conf file.

Could you please post the entire CONF file? I found that double buffering setting can have an affect on music.

Change to:

core = dynamic

cycles = 18000 (or to 20000)

In my i7 720QM notebook, a cycles of 18500 equals to a 486DX2 system running at about 66MHz - tested with PC Tools 9's System Information Professional. The core must be at dynamic, though.

Despite setting core to auto, the performance does not scale well automatically with higher end games.

if still noticing lags,

change to :

output = opengl or overlay

outputs generally will come in the way of smooth sounds.

And disable that pixel shader.

For max speed in a system, the :

core should be dynamic,
cycles should be max.

I'm playing Blood at 800x600 with smooth sound and graphics in the above mentioned notebook.
