There are some games that use the external command MODE.COM for their display configurations. For example, ANGEL DEVOID uses MODE 80 (80 characters per line) which of course isn't available in dosbox and the game crashes with a distorted screen. The problem is that even when you run the original DOS 6.22 mode.com within dosbox it says "incorrect dos version". Is there anything that can be done?

Try mode.com from other DOS'es. It's possible that they don't have that limitation. FreeDOS,DRDOS, OpenDOS...
Then ,there are some games that set that mode when exiting (Project X),
so you can use those to set it 😀

I just patched mode.com from w98se boot disk to fool checking dos version (function 30H, INT 21h). If you want to do it yourself, load mode.com into an hex editor and search: B4 30 CD 21 3D 07 0A 74 18, change the 74 to EB. If you don't want to do this i can send you my modified mode.com, but it's in Spanish (send me a pm).
