Tried to run this game with machine=tandy (the game detects automatically what machine it runs on) but the text doesn't display properly and also I can't see the mouse cursor (yes it is enabled in-game). Is this an emulation issue or am I the only one who's having it?

You're using the version of the game included in DOTT (Maniac Mansion 2), where you have to rename MANIAC.OVL as an .EXE file, and that version's Tandy support is broken. Not really a problem because DOTT wasn't intended to work on older Tandys. You have to use the original release version(s) of the game to get working Tandy support.
Ah, that explains why it didn't work with machine=ega either, d'oh! Sorry about that.
On a real Tandy 1000, it is possible to play an unglitched version of Maniac Mansion with Tandy sound :

You can hex edit the game to fix the problem: VGA machine and Tandy audio for Maniac Mansion?
I got it working fine.

That's the enhanced version, not the one that is included with DotT. The uploader has exchanged the game files or something.
