I'm trying to play Heretic multiplayer. I can get the modem to work, but once it gets in the game it goes waaay to slow... takes about 30 seconds to move 2 feet. This is over a lan.

As for IPX, in the multiplayer guide by canadacow (DosBox Guide to Multiplayer Games) says to type IPXNET bla bla bla, well, If I do what it says for any of the IPXNET commands, it says Illigal command.
