Anyone mind telling me why DOSBox hasn't been updated in five years? I know version .74 is great and all, but a few things that the program uses (sdl_net.dll for example) are dated. If you guys could update DOSBox to version .75 with updated DLLs and whatnot, that'd be helpful. I can't help but feel an updated DOSBox with updated SDL (using sdl2_net.dll instead) would make multiplayer much easier. Just my personal opinion.

My personal favorite is Daum. He usually updates at least once a year, sometimes a bit more often.

Multiplayer would not be easier. SDL_net hasn't changed much in the last five years. The difference between SDL_net and SDL2_net is only the backend, SDL 1.x or 2.x.
