Hi,

Is it just my config or is there something wrong with VLC 2.2.1 regarding DosBox Capture Codec (ZMBV) not playing back?

All I get is blank (black) screen with the in-game audio working fine. MPC-HC plays the videos fine without issues.

I've installed the ZMBV codec from DosBox install and restarted, reinstalled VLC deleting prefs+caches.. still not working.

So are others having similar issues with VLC 2.2.1 or is it just me?

Cheers,
PJ

Not just you... it's a bug with 2.2.1, reported it myself a while ago: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/14975

The comments suggest using VLC 2.2.3, but if anything the problem is worse in that version.

It turns out that VLC does not like the decoded format for native DOSBox recorded video. DOSBox uses "Palettized RGB with palette element R:G:B." What I have done was to run the video through VirtualDub, use the ZMBV codec at 32-bit color depth and do whatever else I want to it. If the decoded format is "16 bits RGB" or "32 bits RGB", you should be good.

Although 32 bit increases the file size a little relative to 16 bit, when capturing VGA it is best to use 32 bit. VGA selects 256 colors from an 18-bit palette, so 16 bit color may lose a bit of fidelity.

This issue has been fixed in the VLC 3.0 nightly builds. 3.0 also restores support for MIDI through FluidSynth, but you will need a soundfont .SF2 file. Not perfect but better than nothing.
