After long hours of trying and much help from these forums I got Dosbox to run Discworld 2. But now when the game runs the screen seems to be out of position. The bottom is cut off and there's a big black gap at the top. I've tried everything. I don't know if it's to do with the game it self or the way Dosbox is configured. I have version 0.63.
Any Help? 😕

I am getting a similar problem in full screen and windowed mode running on windows xp where it seems fine during dos mode but when I run my application it is centered low and wrapped around so that my edges are near the center of the screen and my center is at the edges. Any help?

Check to see if video modes are set using default refresh rates. Some video drivers like nVIDIA's ones allow you to do this (I have a nVIDIA card). I don't know how it is for ATi's Catalyst. Try running DXDIAG also and check the MORE HELP -> OVERRIDE value for video mode (60 for 60fps should be a "safe" value). So try putting a 60 in that box and check back.

I forgot to add that you should also try other video rendering modes under DOSBox config: you name it, surface, overlay, opengl, ddraw...

Fixed it, I reinstalled Dosbox seems to work ok now.

WHAT??
The DOSBox installer follows the KISS-principle - Keep It Simple Stupid. There is not munging with the registry, there is no attempt at detecting the video or sound hardware. All it do is to create a DOSBox-directory somewhere inside your %ProgramsFiles% directory, and copy the DOSBox files there. And it creates a few links in your Start->Programs folder.

So if re-installing fixed your problem, there is only 3 possibilites:

  1. Your previous download was corrupt, causing a corrupt DOSBox to be installed. Not likely.
  2. The installer made an error during the copying. Not likely.
  3. You made a change to the configuration - a change you have forgotten about.

It would be interesting to see a comparison of your current DOSBox install with the previous install. You do not by any chance have a backup of your system from last week?

FYI, here are the MD5 checksums for a fresh install of DOSBox 0.63:

WAaaaaaaaaaahahahaAhAHAHAHA! MiniMax, you so did not just ask someone if they had a weekly backup of their computer. How many people do you know that make weekly backups? Hell, how many people do you know that EVER back up?

Thanks for the good laugh, 😉

Yes, it’s my fault.

It happens to me when using a windowed mode or a full screen mode, I am using windows xp (which is one of the worst yet for tryin to work in dos, yay MS =). The alignment of the window is off for me about 50%ish. Anyone have any other ideas? I did try changing the refresh rates on my monitor to no avail.

skyork - does this happen when you just start DOSBox, or only after you run an application inside DOSBox?

only when I run my application inside of dosbox. When trying to run this same application from a boot from disk to dos (as xp doesn't have a reboot to dos feature) it won't run correctly but the screen position is ok. When in dosbox whether in full screen or a window the screen position is off but the application runs fine. Looks like I may have to go back to using the old 386 we have lying in the corner. the application by the way is an old programming language called "Viewdac" if anyone has any experiance with it. Thanks again for all your help. Shane

Shane, I can not tell you exactly what to do, but go into the dosbox.conf file and locate the entries for "output=" and "scaler=" and play around with the settings. You can also try the different full-screen settings in the sdl (link) section.
