you need to compile Dosbox source with the patch applied to the source. Oruse the DOSBox-EXE build that has the patch already applied, if I'm not mistaken.

No 😉
Look at Dosbox wiki on how to conpile Dosbox, do that and then try your hands at applying the patch

If you don't want to compile dosbox and just want to hear the difference between various OPL emulators, do this:

- capture music using dosbox to DRO file (CTRL ALT F7)

- install https://audacious-media-player.org/

- go to settings, find the adplug and there you can choose between 4 OPL emulators, including nuked OPL3.

- play your DRO file using audacious after seleting an emulator

=> I don't hear any difference between dosbox (woodyopl) and nuked OPL3.
If you choose MAME OPL, you can hear a lot of difference.
Also included is ken silverman's emulator
(see screenshot)

You can save your DRO file to WAV using the filewriter plugin of audacious (so it's saved to WAV by using the selected OPL emulator)

In audacious: settings -> sound -> FileWriter plugin (choose WAV)

Now play the DRO file you want to convert to WAV using audacious.
You won't hear any audio, all output is written to the WAV file
