Question about installing old games using DOSBox

I've never used DOSBox before, or any emulator for that matter so I was wondering if anyone could let me know how the game installation process works and what steps need to be taken. Does it need to be done using DOSBox or can it be done in XP itself? And if either one can be used how are they used? Any help would be appreciated. I've got a few old games here and they've been staring me in the face for a long time. Thanks.

This is in addition to my previous post. This is the system that I'm running:

MSI motherboard
Pentuim IV 2Ghz processor
512MB RAM
MSI MX 440 video card w/64MB RAM
Sound Blaster
Windows XP

The game that I'm mostly wanting to play is Kings Quest V. Again, any help on installation procedures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

For DOSBOX usage see DOSBOX README/wiki/DOSBOX Guides forum.
There is a newbie guide in DOSBOX Guides forum.
There are some frontends for DOSBOX as well

Read at least the README and the newbie guide, act according to it and come back with some real problems ("I did this and this and there was error XXXX..."). Nobody will probably answer you so vague question as you wrote.
Also post DOSBOX related questions to DOSBOX forums.
