Hey everybody. I recently installed Ubuntu Linux 5.04, and have been trying to get Dosbox to run on it. The program itself works fine, and games work fast, but for some reason, the sound doesn't seem to work.

Sound works fine in my Linux version, and I've never had a problem with it.

In Windows, I've installed Dosbox as well (same computer, different partition), and with the same set-up, the sound does seem to work.

Maybe you guys could tell me what I'm doing wrong. I have an on-board sound card from Intel (I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop). If I run cat /proc/asound/cards, this is returned:

0 [ICH5 ]: ICH4 - Intel ICH5
Intel ICH5 with STAC9750/51 at 0xf8fff800, irq 17

If you could help me, that would be greatly appreciated. 😀

You could try messing around with the device= setting in your dosbox.conf. I think DOSBox supports several different Linux sound driver packages, so you may need to either make sure it's using one that you have, or install whichever one it's trying to use.

Do you get any sound-related messages when you start DOSBox? It should say that it's trying to open sound (and possibly music) devices.

SDL is responsible for the dosbox soundoutput. (midi is handled by dosbox though)
so check other SDL games to see if they work
