how do I save my game progress on dosbox? Everytime I try from the options menu of any game, I am not able to. Am I doing something wrong?

DOSBox does not determine how the game should be saved. It depends on the game itself. What "options menu" are you referring to?
If you are looking for a way to save the emulated state itself, DOSBox does not support that.

Maybe your game is installed on a medium which is protected from writing.
If you have pre-installed games located on a CD-ROM, copy them in a directory of your harddrive.
Once done, mount this directory as a virtual C drive in DOSBox.
Example
You can copy your games in a C:\DOS_Games directory,
Then use this command in DOSBox : MOUNT C C:\DOS_Games
