DOSBox CVS now emulates the PCjr, which is great because I can finally run all those PCjr images that sat around on my harddrive for years 😁 (hard to believe that this is the first PCjr emulator... or did I miss one?)
Anyway, since I've never even seen a real PCjr, here are a few tidbits that I'm curious about:
1. Why do PCjr games run so extremely fast? I booted the KQ1 PCjr booter and the Mouser cartridge and with both games I had to lower the CPU Cycles to like 300 or even less to be able to play normally. When I booted the KQ1 Tandy booter while machine=pcjr, it worked in a normal speed, just like it does when machin=tandy. Any special reason for this speeding?
2. How come the KQ1 Tandy booter works perfectly fine when machine=pcjr, but the KQ1 PCjr booter doesn't work correctly (only text is displayed, no graphics) when machine=tandy? I noticed a similar issue with SQ3 (if you set it to use Tandy graphics, it'll work fine when machine=pcjr, but not the other way around). What's the technical difference between Tandy and PCjr anyway? If Tandy versions could have worked perfectly fine on PCjrs, I don't see the point in releasing seperate PCjr versions 😒 (well, other than the fact that perhaps the Tandy wasn't around yet when the PCjr versions were made...)
3. Is the Tandy DAC supposed to be enabled when machine=pcjr? Because it is.
4. I was happy to find out that unlike in previous builds, a boot disk of MS-DOS 6.22 now works fine when machine=tandy (just like it works fine under MESS's Tandy emulation), but unfortunately it doesn't work when machine=pcjr. Is there a reason to that?
5. The "regular" PC booter of KQ1 works fine when machine=tandy (it works like it does when machine=cga (only without composite support), which I guess is the correct behavior), but does not work correctly when machine=pcjr. Why is that?
Well, in any case, it's very good to finally have a PCjr emulator. Thanks!
Incidentally, I've noticed that the CVS Change Log was replaced for a few days with a version history file for DOBox which included version 0.64... What was that!?
