Hi,

I've come across this page and thought that maybe a VSTHost in DosBox would be a good idea for games that support General MIDI:

http://www.hermannseib.com/english/vsthost.htm

If DOSBox included a VSTHost, we could use for example Roland HyperCanvas or Virtual Sound Canvas VST plugins.

I'm thinking of something similar to the foo_midi plugin for foobar2000 0.9:

What do you think? Is it a reasonable feature request? Would it be helpful?

Thanks.
Regards.

You should be able to use a software loopback like MIDI-Yoke to connect DOSBox's MIDI output to Cakewalk or any other application that can apply VST effects to incoming MIDI data.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I haven't been able to test it until now, but I'm very glad of the results: MIDI-Yoke does work very well with DosBox.

I've tested two VST instruments: Virtual Sound Canvas and HyperCanvas. Both of them work perfectly (although I can't decide which one to choose. I suppose that VSC is closer to the real SC-55 and the original sound intended by the composer, but HyperCanvas sounds much better and has more realistic sounds)

However, setting up VSTHost and MIDI-Yoke requires a lot of steps and is perhaps too complicated for newbies.

Maybe if DosBox was capable of loading VST instruments directly it would be a lot easier.

Do you think it's feasible?

Regards.
