As i said: stick to opl2 recording at first.
hm ok then Im in a serious mess. Let me sum it up, from my point of view.
First audio device what came out -> adlib = opl2 = YM3812 chip (mono) = used by many games. Dosbox also threath it as mono, 16 bits. That's why my aim was the 3812.
opl3 = YMF262 = stereo, more waveforms = used by few games, few apps.

it (YM3812) was OPL2 wasnt it? I was dealing with it all time.
Check your dosbox.conf, sb16 by default uses opl3, but you can override that.
If you just had sb16 in your config file, the recording depends on the game
(as opl3 is somewhat backward compatible to opl2 you get opl2-only data
for most of them).
