Can someone explain why some protected-mode games (386+) need dpmi=disabled to run? Shouldn't be enabled all the time?

Well, the main reason is that Dosbox DPMI is still buggy. There are games which crash when it is switched on.
On the other hand there are games which do not run without DPMI. And DOSBOX DPMI support is only way how to run them in DOSBOX (bundled DPMI servers like CSWDPMI crash in DOSBOX).
Would all games run with DPMI switched on in DOSBOX if it was completely ok?: I do not know whether there can be a case where 100% working DPMI interferes with something (like EMS with Ultima 7) or not.

Stiletto brought a few days ago good testing program for DPMI, so it is probable that DPMI comptability will be improved in future.
