Is there a possibility that DOSBOX would in future be able to handle data from an external port on a MacBook?
I have an oscilloscope with an RS232 output which originally allowed access from a DOS program which previously I used to be able to run on a DOS emulator running on a RISCOS computer.

Your best bet is probably to put an actual DOS installation on VirtualBox. You could also try FreeDOS, although I can't guarantee that will do what you want.

But your Macbook does not have any RS232 serial port to accept the input from the oscilloscope.

On PC with real RS232 serial ports, getting serial raw I/O pass-through from DOSBox to host is possible. Only the raw serial I/O accesses are passed through onto host real RS232 serial ports, IRQ does not work. So interrupt driven operation will not work. PCI serial ports can be made to work, too, but legacy serial ports are easier to work with due to the hardwired I/O addresses.

USB serial ports cannot work with raw I/O pass-through.
