It's more a feature of Debian and it's cousins. Pretty sure Ubuntu can do the same.

Not only apple is focusing more on 64 bit binaries. Android walks the same way :

From 2019/08 will be 64 binaries required for native code. Application cannot include only 32bit.

Operating in the embedded space, if you have to take the hit (in code size) of moving to 64 bit, at least you can avoid the extra space used for hauling around 32 bit libraries as well.
