Games such as Bricks, Round 42, Moonbugs, etc. which use the CGA 16-colour mode don't look correct anymore under 0.62, they looked fine under 0.61.

Also the handling of the Caps Lock key is incorrect, as can be seen by trying to play Bricks.

Strange Round 42 works wonderfully on my machine (0.62).

Try fiddeling with fullfixed/aspect/scalers

Maybe that will help.

Nope, Round 42 is no good for me anymore 🙁 Are you using the default settings, or did you have to change something to get it to work?

I will have a fiddle as you suggest, but these games never needed fiddling under 0.61...I really think something in the CGA emulation subsystem must have been broken during the upgrade to 0.62.

And I *still* can't play Bricks regardless of graphics issues, due to the Caps Lock problem 🙁

I should point out that the graphics effect seen with these games is IIRC the same as with old versions of DOSBox such as 0.58 thru 0.60 (I think). This was fixed for 0.61 and unfixed for 0.62 🙁

The keyboard handling has *always* been buggy, though it is slowly getting better (eg. Ins key is now handled properly) 🙁

did you set machine to cga ?

0.61 dosbox came with a auto sensing default

now it defaults to a vga machine

see dosbox.conf for details.

An interesting an example of all the video modes is to try each of them on Ultima6.
(There seems to be some bugs in Hercules when exiting Ultima6)
Ultima6 supports Hercules, Tandy, CGA, and VGA/MCGA.

hmm thought it was implemented right. Will have to look up the game to see what it expects 😉

@Minuous
Just out of curiosity. Did you ever make it through Round 42?

capslock handling is a bug of sdl.

it doesn't report a capslock up.
(as it only reports state changes. so capslock on and capslock off)
I have no idea why they do that. (or it least did that.) but that's why capslock is behaving differently.

Just thinking - what about using key mapper to map CAPS LOCK on another key? Then you will be able to play.
Disclaimer: I do not remember now whether it is possible to remap CAPS LOCK in keymapper...

Although Caps Lock is theoretically supported in the keymapper, it doesn't actually work in practice for that key.

Also since I have started experimenting with the keymapper I am getting a lot of "segmentation fault - SDL parachute deployed" messages, either when loading DOSBox, when trying to bring up the keymapper window, or when exiting DOSBox. Although sometimes it works fine. Odd.

That's because of a bug that wasn't caught before DOSBox 0.62 was released.
It's been fixed in the Sourcecode.

I have also found another CGA emulation bug, this one occurs in Frogger. In DOSBox in CGA mode, the blue river background moves about instead of being still. (In DOSBox in VGA mode, the wrong colour palette is used and the river background is black (ie. not present) - same as when run directly from Windows 98, and probably in MS-DOS).

I did. In fact, I once made it three time round before dying. Didn't happen often though 😀.
