Hi everyone,

I'm having a few problems with Screamer 1...I have managed to install it, and it runs fairly respectably in dynamic core mode on my system (see below for specs). However, when I reach the fifth race in the championship (the port level) DOSBox crashes. This is completely reproduceable.

The interesting thing is that I had this exact same problem on an Athlon 800 years back. It crashes more or less at the same position every time - when you're driving past the cranes on the left picking up the crates.

My system:
Athlon X2 4400
GeForce 8600GT
2MB DDR-RAM
WinXP + Ubuntu (I'll try it in Ubuntu later and see if that makes a difference)

Unfortunately my system is too slow to play it under a fully emulated core.

Would appreciate feedback from anyone with reports of success or failure. Thanks!

Edit: I've tried this with 0.72 and CVS 09122007

Edit 2: I managed to make a screenshot before the window closes after a crash

jamyskis - if you are using cycles=auto, try with a fixed cycle-setting. Also, try starting DOSBox with the -noconsole switch. Then all DOSBox-messages will go to a pair of text files (stdout.txt + stderr.txt) instead of the DOSBox console and will easily available even after a crash.

I remember the SVGA mode of "Screamer" crashing on a regular basis on my old Pentium too. Try finishing that race in VGA mode.

IMHO there's something wrong with that game.

The SVGA setting was the problem. I switched over to VGA and it worked fine. A shame - SVGA looked so good, and I don't really think we can hope for a patch.

Thanks everyone!

You could try to switch to VGA to get past the crash (save the game once you are past), and switch back to SVGA to see if it works again.

BTW, isn't that one of those games using DOS4GW.EXE? Have you tried to use DOS/32 instead?

If DOS4GW is to blame of the crashes that could solve it.

Also, you might try using VDMSound, dgVoodoo and the Voodoo patch for Screamer...

I know that my copy of Screamer crashes now and then but I always play in high-res mode - haven't had it crash in 0.72 though but that may just be coincidence.
