when I try exiting the city it gives me a dos prompt C:\> and I can type something in and when I type in darklands it restarts the entire game.

Darklands was pretty buggy at release, so make sure you have it patched. I think 1.07 was the last official patch. It could be that you are encountering the copy protection. The game would prompt you to enter a word that corresponded to a symbol off a sheet that came with the game. If you didn't enter it properly it would drop you to DOS.
