Hello and salutations!
I have a doozy here, and i hope you guys can help 😁
Im doing a longplay video series on youtube. And this time i want to do a Longplay of a game i bought back in 1997, called Bad Mojo.
And i want to use DosBox to record it!
This is beacuse i haven't found a great way to record the Redux version that works in XP. I've tried, trust me i have! I get video but not sound.
So i want to use DosBox instead because its much better than the most of the options out there.

I used this nice fellows guide to install Win 3.11 to get the game running:
Windows 3.1x DOSBox Guide
I folowed every step and it looks like windows 3.11 is working nicley.
I have installed the game and everything.

Im not using any pirated software of Bad Mojo. I have the real thing 😉
I even got the receipt! (yeah i know.. thats kinda weird..)
After the game is installed i boot it up. I get the logo for the game and publisher, then i press new game. I get the main intro. Works perfectly.
The i start to enter the game. Then it goes, bad...
First thing i see/hear is that the sound is missing. And when i leave the screen the game freezes. And nothing happens. I press CTRL F9, and restart DosBox, boot up win 3.11 and star the game again.
Not forgetting to mount E E:\ -t cdrom (E: is my cdrom).

This time i turn of something called "extra" sound (The ambience music and sound of the game in the background) and i get to the next part of the game. I hear now the cd-rom is booting up too. This did not happen last time. I get a litle further into the game. I meet a cutscene and then when entering next area sound is gone again (Grr..), then game freezes again.

Next time i tried removing all sound from the game.
Not the game works. But no sound of course ;P (hit by captain obvious *smack*!)
("And a bug wildley appears"!) When you get the the fith area you meet a boss of some kind. Some scary music starts (But?.. I tuned of the sound! :[ ) After killing the spider i go to the next screen, and the music is still playing. I get to the next area, and the music is STILL PLAYING *CRY* ;*-(
What can i do?

hmm, I did manage to install and run Bad Mojo on Dosbox before, I *think* even either with 0.73 or in a beta of 0.73...
I'll have a look later.
Importan thing to check, which version of Quicktime do you have installed?

Edit: just confirmed it, it was running fine for me with a beta of 0.73. I'll post later again...

Edit2: and yes, it still works for me with version 0.73

Yes i have installed latest version of quicktime for win 3.11 😀
There where one version with the game, but it did not work. It could not play any of the videos. Got an error message every time.

Thank you for looking into this 😁
I really appreciate it 😁

To Myloch:
Yes i know. I tried. But somehow under the installation to get VGA with 256 colours something went terribly wrong 😢
Allot of work to get it up and running again. AND i have to use something els than DosBox to record the video 🙁

Unofrtunately this was not the easy solution 🙁 (I have the same Quicktime). But my Windows 3.11 system has all kinds of drivers loaded, since the system is really old (it is my original system from the time when the current Windows version WAS 3.11).
I'll try tomorrow with a clean Windows install. Could you attach a savegame so I can test directly your problem, I might just not experience the same when starting up the game...

Ok.
The savgemae i have attached is with the mixed sound off.
This is because when i try to start the game with full sound i get a black screen when i try to enter the meny screen again.
And the game freezes 😢
I dont know fo this makes any difference when you load the game..

If that's what you're doing, you should get the high-res rerelease, Bad Mojo Redux. It's exactly the same game but it looks a lot better and does not have these ridiculous technical issues.

Oops. 😦 It must surely be said that this is not looking much better anymore, though. I'd offer suggestions for getting audio recording working, but you've probably looked into those already.

Tried something new today. I made a ISO file of the CD and mounted it as new drive. I wa happy to see it work for a few moments of the game, then suddenly the sound went away again. Darn.. 😢
And im back at square one. Its like the game stops reading from the cd. Dont know why 😖

EDIT!
This was interesting read from the help file on the cd:

New Sound Options

There are some new sound options which will appear in the
badmojo.ini file.

They are:
SmallChunkSize=3
BigChunkSize=26
BigChunkMethod=0

Although generally speaking, the default configuration will work well,
these options may be tweaked (within reason) for different sound
card configurations to enhance audio performance. Unfortunately,
there are no hard and fast rules, as the optimum sound performance
depends on so many different variables: type of sound card,
processor speed, amount of available RAM while running Bad Mojo, etc.

If there are gaps or skips in the sound, you should adjust the
SmallChunkSize or BigChunkSize value as indicated below. If there
gaps in sound when moving from screen to screen, you should adjust
the BigChunkMethod.

Acceptable values for BigChunkMethod are either 0 or 1. 0 means
that lots of small chunks get mixed prior to going synchronous for
awhile. 1 means that some small chunks get mixed, followed by
some large ones, followed again by some small ones to get the
whole ball rolling again. Try changing this option if there are
gaps in sound between screens, or if there is a gap in the sound
upon playing the first non-background sound on a new screen, i.e:
walking out of the sewer into a puddle.

SmallChunkSize is the basic sound buffer size that is used.
Internally, it is multiplied by 2048. Acceptable values are
between 1 and 5.
If you have a fast computer, you may use values of a smaller
chunk size.

BigChunkSize is the size (* 2048) of the large chunks of sound
that get mixed before the program goes synchronous (i.e: between
screens) and cannot mix small buffers. Acceptable values are
between 2 and 30. Again if your machine is relatively fast, you
can get away with smaller values.

Some values that work well for some cards we have tried are:
Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum (on a 486/66):
BigChunkMethod=1
BigChunkSize=26
SmallChunkSize=3
Gravis Ultrasound MAX (on a 586/100):
BigChunkMethod=1
BigChunkSize=26
SmallChunkSize=2
ESS AudioDrive (stock in a Compaq Pentium 90)
BigChunkMethod=1
BigChunkSize=26
SmallChunkSize=3
Creative Labs AWE32 (also Sound Blaster 16) on a Pentium 90
BigChunkMethod=0
BigChunkSize=26
SmallChunkSize=3
(NOTE: These are the defaults).

After checking my bad mojo folder i could not find the *.ini file.
So i tried making it myself with notepad and entering the line:
BigChunkMethod=0
BigChunkSize=26
SmallChunkSize=1
But alas did not help.
Anyone els have this mysterious *.ini file. or know where its hidden?

EDIT 2:

found it! It was in the windows folder...
Wait what?
Anyway. I tried teaking (like tweaking just more tea) the numbers but with no real result.
I get sound to the first cutscene, and then the sound just cuts out.
Anyone have any clue what kinda levels i should use for the sound 😀 ?

I have solved the problem. I did a new installing of the game.
But that did not fix the original problem.
But what ficed it then?
OK! Here is what i did to go around this problem.
It looks like the main sound error/fault is hotspotted at the first cutscene, right?
So i turned of the mixed sound feature, and just playd with just sound, and i got past the point of the gass burner. When i entered the new area i saved, restarted the game, marked the mixed sound box again, and loaded the game. And it worked! Now i get sound and music and the hills are alive again!
figurally speaking that is...

Well im of to record this old game!
Thank you for the suport.
