Well maybe you can formulate your problem more precisely.
Like what you mean with video mode switching, what fonts
you want it to read etc.

The game or dosbox?

dosbox needs to go to video mode but cant, i have xp and the res. only goes to 800X 600 as its lowest

So you start dosbox and it tells you that it can't switch to resolution xy
or does it tell that only when you start a game?
And what's the resolution/colour depth of your desktop?

my resolution currently is 1024X768 and when i command dosbox to start a game, it sayd it needs to switch to video mode, which is 640X480, im trying to run mugen dbz if that helps

Be sure that you're using dosbox 0.65.
Maybe you can post a screenshot of the error (png preferred).

how do i check?

The top line of the dosbox window should read like "DOSBox 0.65".
If you're unsure download it again from the homepage (http://dosbox sf.net)
and install it.
