Chuck Yeager's Air Combat - Soundblaster problems

Postby UndeadHalfOrc » 2010-3-13 @ 16:29

This game came in a compilation I bought in the 90's when I bought, of all things, a real soundblaster.

All of my other old games work fine with dosbox, except this one.

I'm using Dosbox 0.72, here is the relevant soundblaster section of my config file:

sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=7
dma=1
hdma=5
mixer=true
oplmode=auto
oplrate=22050

And this game has no user friendly configuration utility - you're supposed to start the game with the argument BLASTER, but it doesn't work. And it doesn't let me specify the IRQ ( I tried changing the IRQ in the dosbox.conf from 5 to 7 and forth, no luck)

The Adlib music sounds fine, but there are no sound effects or voice.

Thanks in advance!

Here is the relevant section in the readme file that came with the game:

Startup Parameters

When you start Yeager Air Combat, the program automatically
detects the best graphics mode for your computer and starts the
game in that mode. However, if you want to start the game in a
different graphics mode, you can do so by adding a few extra
characters (called arguments) to the start command.

EXAMPLE: Let's say you want to load the game with EGA graphics
mode and use a joystick. You'd type YEAGER EGA JOYSTICK and press
Enter.

The order of the extra arguments doesn't matter as long as
there's a space between each argument.

These are the arguments you can use:
EGA Loads game with EGA graphics.
MCGA Loads game with MCGA graphics (Same graphics as VGA,
but slower. Maintains compatibility with PS/2 25
and 30).
VGA Loads game with VGA graphics.

SLOWCARD When you are in MCGA or VGA mode, if the game freezes
on startup, or if you get sound but the wrong colors
or no colors at all, try this parameter. It slows down
the interface between the computer and the video card.

FASTCARD Deactivates Slowcard.
JOYSTICK Loads game with joystick flight control.
KEYBOARD Loads game with keyboard flight control.
MOUSE Loads game with mouse flight control.
MOUSE2 Loads game with high-resolution mouse flight control.

LOW Loads game in low graphics detail mode (less detail
speeds up game play).
MEDIUM Loads game in medium graphics detail mode (less details
speeds up game play).
HIGH Loads game in high graphics detail mode.

NOSOUND Loads game with sound turned off.
NOSPEECH Loads game with digitized speech turned off.
PC Loads game with PC internal speaker sounds.
ADLIB Loads game with AdLib sound card sounds.
BLASTER Loads game with Sound Blaster sound card sounds.

ALL If you want to be able to play all missions without
having to win each one, type this parameter to make
all missions available immediately. This is a default
parameter.
CAMPAIGN Starts new campaign. In order to advanced in Campaign
Mode, you will need to land safely at your home base
after successfully completing each missions. (See
"Playing in Campaign Mode.")

Note: when you quit the game, the program automatically remembers
all of that game's startup parameters, as well as all the items
checked on the drop-down menus. The next time you start the game,
just type YEAGER and press Enter, and those same parameters and
menu items will be in effect. Also, if you quit the game in the
middle of a Campaign, and you want to return to where you left
off, be sure not to select the Campaign parameter the next time
you start up the game, as that will put you at the beginning of a
new campaign.

The SB digital audio works fine for me with 0.72, 0.73, and current SVN, using a default config. I don't even have to use the BLASTER command line, it seems to detect and use the SB on its own. If you have a YEAGER.CFG file, try removing it (but keep a backup).

I tried renaming the yeager.cfg file - no change. It then created a new one.

if I don't use the BLASTER option, the game won't even use adlib music and will use PC speaker music.
At least with Blaster, the game uses adlib to play the music and make the plane engine and weapon noises.

I upgraded to 0.73 - no change

I tried messing around with the IRQ from 7 to 5 - no change

I tried lowering the cycles - no change

With a default dosbox config file the game refuses to have speech. Something must be wrong with my game. It's a legit copy, from an old 1995 compilation CD rom by EA (EA had just bought Origins. ). I'm beginning to think I am simply missing some voice files - the total size of the installation is only 1.40 MB !!!!!

my installation is also 1.40 MB and chuck randomly says either:
"welcome to chuck yeager's air combat"
or
"it's a great day for flying"

It also works with both irq 5 and 7

he also talks with pc speaker (metalic sound)
and with adlib (very hard to understand)

So answer my questions.

The version I'm looking at came out well before 1995, but here are the file details including CRC-32 for comparison:

1B       LIB            101,659 15-06-1991  9:36    23486289
2A       LIB            276,273 15-06-1991  9:36    3F061193
2B       LIB             85,679 15-06-1991  9:36    BD1DC3F6
3A       LIB            339,508 15-06-1991  9:36    EA5B0C28
4A       LIB            292,628 15-06-1991  9:36    8DEE0E9C

I had a HUGE post prepared and I answered all those questions about my PC but this **** forum canceled & erased it when I previewed it and now I don't feel like typing it up again, but here's my config file
And I use Win XP, home edition
AMD Athlon

My conf file is nothing out of the ordinary (the forum refuses to let me paste the contents, else it cancels my post request)

I'm not an idiot, I know how to cut and paste.

But my internet explorer refuses to generate the PHP for the submit if the submitted text is too large.

But I was a newbie regarding attaching files on this forum. Here it is

BTW, I really appreciate what you guys did with this wonderful piece of software, keep up the good work :)

I just really wanna make this game 100% functional since it's the last one in my collection to give me problems

(well this one and M.A.X., which is painfully slow in dosbox compared to how smooth it runs in Win 98)

reset cycles to its default value (auto)
make sure you don't have any autoexec.bat or config.sys in your c:\oldgames\ directory
you can copy/paste content of dosbox status windows

>>reset cycles to its default value (auto)

Ok, that didn't work either. Still the crappy unintelligible PC speaker voice

> make sure you don't have any autoexec.bat or config.sys in your
c:\oldgames\ directory

I don't. There are no files at all in there, only folders of games

>you can copy/paste content of dosbox status windows

How? It doesn't allow me to select any text.
But there's never anything out of the ordinary in my dosbox status window.

right click on the title bar of status window

check whether you hear voice with all: speaker, adlib and blaster parameters. all should sound differently and tell us what you hear with every parameter

set cycles to 3000

Ok, lowered it to 3000 cycles.

DOSBox version 0.73
Copyright 2002-2009 DOSBox Team, published under GNU GPL.
---
CONFIG:Loading primary settings from config file dosbox.conf
MIDI:Opened device:win32
One joystick reported, initializing with 4axis
Using joystick GamePad Pro USB with 2 axes, 10 buttons and 0 hat(s)

Ok, I tried it with all three parameters.
PC (for pc speakers) - the music sucks, but Chuck voice is remarkably audible in this setting.
Adlib - same as before, great music but unintelligible voice
Blaster - same as adlib. :(

And with BLASTER the engine and machine gun sounds are identical to Adlib. Is this the same with you?
