There are two ways to fix Tower Assault crash in DOSbox 0.74:
1. Disable EMS, XMS and UMB.
OR:
2. Type "ver 6.00" to tell Tower Assault that DOS version.
In both cases, use the installer to disable sound.
I got both basic Alien Breed and Tower Assault from old-games.ru, though GOG has them for sale.

Why move? It's not a help request, it's a tip to others who might have the same issue 😐

I thought games/apps is for questions, GUIDE being for fixes.

Done, posted an entry, only with the easier of the two fixes.

Is "ver 6.00" intended to change the version of DOS that DOSBox reports? If so, I don't think that works; the command should be "ver set 6 0". Doesn't appear to be necessary in any case...

Also, disabling sound is not necessary to get the game working in DOSBox, it does work with sound. However, with SB sound there is DMA wrapping causing an error exit in 0.74, so you could use 0.73 or an SVN build to play with SB sound. There is also an option for GUS sound, but it seems flaky in my attempts to get it to work.

I'm on DOSbox 0.74 official... oh, just checked, still reports dos 5. Well, I'm uncertain then...
Another fix is to disable EMS+XMS+UMB, but that's probably not recommended.
I have trouble with dos 5 reported even without sound. It's 7-x64.

Works fine here in 0.74 with default settings when the game is configured for no sound, but has the problem with DMA wrapping when using SB sound. Disabling XMS/EMS/UMB does not appear to help with the DMA wrapping, nor does loadfix. But, again, The error exit for DMA wrapping is specific to 0.74, and does not exist in 0.73 or SVN builds.

Maybe I should try using the CD versions of both AB and TA? Maybe those would have it fixed?

The problem is fixed in current code (that's what SVN stands for) or dosbox 0.73. Meaning that if you want to play it with sound get an SVN build or version 0.73.
