I have a copy of the oldest CD-ROM conversion of The Manhole. It is a conversion of the floppy version released for DOS. I have tried mounting the directory and the bin/cue sheet using imgmount. The game will load, but only a black screen will appear. When the image is burnt to a CD, the CD works OK (some pops and cracks though) in my 486 with the cache disabled. The CD is a mixed-mode CD containing a data track and 96 audio tracks. The floppy version works fine.

My CD is not the "New and Enhanced Edition" or the CD-ROM Masterpiece Edition", the latter of which was released for Windows only.

What happens on your 486 with cache enabled?

Have you tried changing the CPU type in DOSBox?

If you use a Debug-enabled version, do any unusual messages appear?

I found the same bug report on Sourceforge but for ScummVM. Is this your ticket? Seems like the version you have came from Magnavox CD-ROM bundle. However I think the disk contains one data track and 95 audio tracks, by looking at the CUE file provided on Sourceforge. So this should be the same version.

Is your image made with IsoBuster? If yes I found a few topics where IsoBuster sets Track 1 to MODE2. Don't know if this is related, but who knows. Don't have the game so I can't test it. 😢

My cue file corresponds to the one posted by P4R4D0X.

The debug console outputs the following, over and over in an infinite loop :

MISC:MSCDEX: INT 2F 1510 BX= 4E3C CX=0003

MISC:MSCDEX: Status : 0100

I'd try using the real MSCDEX, but I do not have a device driver that will work with DOSBox's emulated CD drive. On my 486 I am using MS-DOS 6.22 with MSCDEX 2.23.

I wonder if it's some weird bug in the SDL CD-ROM handling? That would affect both ScummVM and DOSBox, wouldn't it?

I suppose one test would be to edit the CUE file to indicate fewer tracks.

It appears that the audio status function should report zero start and end times when the device is not playing. It makes sense, and the game wants the behavior in any case. A patch for the issue is attached.

Thanks, this "game" now works! One of the oldest CD-ROM games too. I was able to apply it successfully to the source and compile an executable that makes the game work. Here is hoping the patch gets added to the official SVN.
