Hi,
i tried to play x-wing cd-edition, but every time dosbox says: "not enoug memory".
i installed the tool, from which i forgot the name, with which i can rightclick on a file and create a shortcut.
i right-clicked on the file switched to the advance-settings and increased the ems- and xms-memory to 16 mb but nothing changed.

i also installed vsmsound
my machine:
athlon 2600+
512 mb ram
win xp

There are two ways to go. The first, and best, is to get the Windows updated version from Lucas Arts. With your old DOS version they allow a trade in for something like $10. They might also have a download patch available if you check their website.

The second method is using DOSBOX and playing with the settings, but I don't know for sure what would work, since I now have the Windows X-Wing. I do have similar problems with Tie Fighter (and haven't yet upgraded) but I have not been able to get that working, so it could be the same boat you are in.
