from "the cule!" install.inf:
Problem: The system crashes or the program aborts or doesn't start.
Solution:You don't have enough free memory. Don't start the game
from utilities like Norton Commander or PC TOOLS. Exit that
programs and start the game directly from the DOS.
Maybe you don't have installed XMS memory. If you use the EMM386
or QEMM386 it is possible that the memory is declared as EMS
memory. Please change the line in your CONFIG.SYS to
DEVICE = C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
or
DEVICE = C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS D=64
If you are not quite sure about this changes in your CONFIG.SYS
please use your PC instruction manual.
Change into the directory where you have installed THE CLUE! and
type SETUP >ENTER<.
Maybe you are using utilities which are installed resident in
memory. For example DOSKEY or anything similar. Please remove
such programs from your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
If you have any memory-problems please check the following lines
in your CONFIG.SYS:

If you get the errormessage NOT ENOUGH MEMORY FREE, although you
have enough conventional and XMS memory free, you will need more UMB
memory. Please delete all programs which use UMB memory!
