Hi everyone,

I've been trying to get Hammer of the Gods to run in DosBox.

At this point all I've managed is to get the intro running. Once Odin's fiery eye sends me on my mission, I get a black screen and it's over...

Has anyone managed to get Hammer of the Gods running on winXP through DosBOx or any other emulator/app? If so, could please let me know what you did?

Thank you in advance,
Chris

Thanks for the reply 😀

Unfortunately, the change you suggested doesn't seem to make a difference. I get to watch the entire intro, like before, then see the Hammer of the Gods logo and then the screen goes entirely black.

The funny thing is that I'm using the original CD, bought sometime in 1995.

Any other suggestions, please?

Again, thank you in advance.

Chris

uhm it seems that intro works but the launching of the main exe fails

try this :
setsound
select no sound or soundblaster

run the game with
hamgam z

Thank you for the reply.

Again, I am very sorry to say, no luck.

I can get the intro running by typing "hammer", but "hamgam z" returns me to the DosBox screen with a message "Please insert Hammer of the Gods CD", which, of course, is already in the cdrom.

So, in short, the quest to get Hammer of the Gods running, continues.

Your help and suggestions are greatly appreciated,

Chris

well the version from some down dog runs with hamgam z
I have no more ways of testing it.

Anyway please mount your cdrom correctly.

Perhaps I haven't mounted my cdrom correctly...

This is what I included in the autoexec. of the DosBox conf:

mount e e:\ -t cdrom
mount c c:\
c:
cd games

When DosBox loads, I receive the message MSCDEX.EXE installed
Drive E: mounted as cdrom

then DosBox switches to c:\games

Should I try anything else? The down canine version freezes after the intro as well...

Hi there,

that´s a little strange. I had the same problems just like you, but after a little searching on the web, I found out, that starting the game with "hamgam z" skips the intro and runs it without music. So normally it should work with you just fine, especially since I have WinXP Pro too. Perhaps you should try it with the version from the dog? http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=1927

Oh, I forgot. I didn´t mount the CD-Rom, because the version I own doesn´t ask for it.

Hi Darkchylde,

First of all, thank you very much for taking the time to reply.

Now, this is strange, but your suggestion actually works!

Ah, I realise this doesn't sound quite right, so please let me explain:

I had already downloaded the "arf-arf" version, and, at Qbix's suggestion, had tried to launch the game using the hamgam z command. It seems that the music or the intro sequence -or some combination of both- was the source of my problems.

The thing is, the first couple of times I tried the hamgam z command nothing happened. Then, after reading your post, I thought I should give it it one more try and, what do you know, the game runs perfectly.

Apparently I was doing something wrong before, but the timing was...well, amazing, really.

Again, for taking the time to reply, and for some extra good karma that got Hammer of the Gods running, thank you 😁
