Hi, basically I want to know what I'm doing wrong, i follow the steps laid out by the guides, I can mount my hard drive easy enough and access the directory where the game is at (quake) but it just doesnt run. I type in quake.exe and nothing happens, then after a minute or so the log window in the back starts generating hundreds of "Illegal read from xxx" statements.

Any ideas on what I'm failing to do? 😕

Wrong. DOSBOX emulates FPU! There must some other bug. But I think that the Quake would be probably too slow anyway (just guessing - I did not try it).

Most likely they wanted to be sure that you have a
fast machine by restricting the game to a pentium
(or at least recommending one...).

Dynamic core did work pretty well with this game btw.

If you are talking about quake1 it sure as hell did not require a pentium.. I remember playing quake2 with a pentium 100, and that was quite a bit later.
It does need a floating point unit, but other than that a 486DX-2 >50MHz should be fine. Cant remember about visual quality issues though.

But I do think there are a lot of better ways to play quake now than playing the original in an emulator just browse around the web and you'll surely find some neat stuff 😀

Quake 1 ran on my ol' 486 DX4/100 and on a friends DX2/66.

It works in latest CVS but it's sllooooow.
