Hi,

I'm trying the freeware version of "The Lost Vikings".
http://dist.blizzard.com/downloads/classics/9 … ost_Vikings.zip

This is available on Blizzard website : https://us.battle.net/account/download/?show=classic

I can run it but the issue is that I don't manage to get sound (I'm running 0.74 on Ubuntu).

Do some of you managed to get sound with this game ?

Hi,

I've managed to get it because it's a windows executable.

Why not get a linux binary of dosbox?

How are you running it? It looks like that's a modified win32 ver of DOSBox

I used only the files inside the "VIKINGS" folder.
Which I run via dosbox. The game starts but I can't get any sound.

I've created a .bat file that I run with command dosbox vikings.bat which contains:

cd VIKINGS
VIKINGS

The game files provided by Blizzard are configured for GM sound. If your host system does not have a MIDI synth of some sort then you can probably find one to install. Alternatively, I think the ECE build of DOSBox includes fluidsynth, but I've never tried to use it before.

Blizzard took a problematic approach here. There is supposed to be a separate setup program that allows you to configure the sound, and it also "brands" the game data file as copy protection. Without that program the game settings can't be reconfigured short of hacking, and the game will only work on DOSBox 0.74 (e.g. it terminates with a copy protection error in DOSBox SVN).

Their .conf makes dosbox crash. So I had to remove the autoexec stuff.
After that, the game starts but I can't get any sound.

(?

Works here.

Problematic approach indeed...
Terminates with the copy protection error in DOSBox-X too..
