Summary

I am trying to run "Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space",
("B.A.R.I.S." or BARIS), the CD version, in DosBox-0.61 on Windows XP. I
always get to play it up to the point in which it tries to play a
video, when it always stops working.

Description

I am trying to run the CD version. So right away I have this question:

ARE THE FOLKS HERE ON VOGON, THE ONES THAT RUN BARIS, ARE
THEY ALL RUNNING THE DOWNLOADED VERSION?
IS IT THAT THE CD VERSION DOESN'T REALLY RUN IN DOSBOX?

And I have another question

I SEE THE NOTE THAT DOSBOX DOES NOT SUPPORT 16 BIT
GRAPHICS.
THIS VIDEO CARD IS 16 bit, BUT I DON"T KNOW IF THE BARIS CD IS
FORCING 16 BITS. AFTER ALL, OTHER FOLKS HERE SAY THEY PLAY
THE PRODUCT.

Well, I have the CD in the boxed product, and it is marked
Copyright 1993 Interplay Productions
and
The "Enhanced", "Cinematic", "Multimedia" "ROM" for DOS.
(By the way, I've tried to run it directly in Windows XP, and it
gets a "Divide Error". Dosbox got past and eliminated that
problem.)

Under DOSBOX, it does run through its music and slide show and
onscreen graphics. The sound ran nicely, the CD tracks, and the
.WAV files.

All is okay up to the screen in which one of the countries shows
a video. This is either "My country is launching a satellite" or
the announcement that "the other country has orbited a
satellite". I have tried it in full screen, and as a windowed
part of the desktop. It does not matter whether

1) the video is in the fullscreen (Alt-Enter) mode with nothing
else on the screen, or
2) in Fullscreen mode with some graphics framing it, or
3) in a window on the Windows XP Desktop.

Here are the symptoms.

The screen gives a shot of Mission Control (a drawing, not a
photo) framing the video and I get the idea that a countdown is
starting, but the video of the rocket launch (that I've heard of)
never starts. And the whole thing hangs.

What I see, often, is that the top of the video starts its first
frame, and then the screen goes black.

(I get a little static in the upper left corder of the video
section of the screen, and if I fiddle with keys, I may get
another single burst of static, as if a single frame more of
video had tried to display. Then it's frozen.)

When I have managed to get back to the desktop while this is
happening, Dosbox's frame does not refresh and is not responsive
(like a click on the big red X in the upper right does not even
invert the X's colors). Task Manager says that dosbox.exe is
eating up something like 97% of the CPU. I can kill it rather
easily with Task Manager.

There is no CDROM problem that I am aware of.

The CD player, drive E:, is a DVD drive. I also have a CD burner as drive F:, but I haven't tried it yet (just thought of it).

HERE IS WHAT I HAVE TRIED

I have tried this by installing on NTFS with the CD, and tried it, and then
tried installing on a FAT32 partition with the CD and tried it,.

I have disabled the sound completely, in DosBox and tried it,.

Then I disabled the sound completely, in the SETUP.EXE in \BARIS and tried it,.

I made certain that dosbox's modem was off, and that BARIS was not in modem, multiplayer mode.

Made sure there are no autoexec statements I know off (I use D-Fend a lot.)

I tried setting "Scale" to "None" from "normal2x" and back, trying it both ways.

I tried running the video while CPU Cycles was 25,000.
Then tried it at 501 cycles.
And otherwise tried 2,500.
(I even tried 1 CPU cycle, but that didn't go anywhere.)

I tried it at zero Frames Skipped, and at 10 FS.

I tried the "doublebuffer" and "fullfixed" flags.

I tried making sure the CDROM was rotating *before* the video
started (by accessing it with Explorer and then running the video while the CD was still spinning).

I have searched as much as I could for BARIS and "Buzz Aldrin's
Race Into Space" and "XP" through the Forums and on Google and
the net. The manufacturers don't seem to be out there any more. I found a mention of the problems on "NTcompatible" -- solution was "run dosbox".

I *think* I have read the README. I went all through "DosBox
Guides", and "DosBox General", and read the "Game X Doesn't Work"
and "Newbies Guide" and "Follow These Guidelines" posts.

Here is my conf file.

So, I am still head scratching.

Can I get the CD to run? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for reading this,

I've been running both the floppy (from HOTU) and CD versions of BARIS in DOSBox. I'm running DOSBox v. .63. I did fiddle with some of the settings, but I didn't have any real trouble getting it to run (note: I'm running D-Fend2 as my interface to DOSBox). I did, however, have trouble installing the game on my Windows 2000 system. It wouldn't install completely under 2000. So what I did was install it on a 98 box, and copy that folder to my 2000 system.

You can download a copy of my installed version from DIRECT LINKING IS NOT ALLOWED. Try that. Instead of running the install on the CD, unzip BARIS_Installed.zip to a FAT16 or FAT32 drive (it will automatically create a \BARIS folder and place the files and subfolders inside it). Rename the folder if you like. Then follow the instructions above for running the game in DOSBox. This installation is set up on drive D:, with the CD-ROM on drive K:. You should not actually need to place BARIS on your drive D: and have a CD-ROM drive on K:, but be sure to set up DOSBox to mount the drives as those letters.

NOTE: The BARIS_Installed.zip link above doesn't seem to work right for me if I click on it--so you may have to copy and paste it into a browser.

Peyre. Helping others is a good thing. Posting direct links for downloading copyrighted games IS NOT. Sorry.

I realize that, which is why I didn't post a link to download a copy of the game CD itself. What I posted was a copy of what the install program puts on your hard drive, not the game itself. You still need the BARIS CD to run the game (though admittedly I didn't make that clear in my post); the file I offered TomTAC only allows you to bypass the installation process, in case you have trouble running INSTALL.EXE.

Well, even installed files, and even if they're not complete, are copyrighted. While that link would be of no use to anyone but owners of the CD, it could get you into trouble anyways.

...except that I have permission from the game's author (to whom title to the game has reverted) to share the game so long as I don't charge for it.

It would be helpful if you could point us to that information.

I mention that this game was published by the now all-but-defunct Interplay (have you seen their web site lately? Pretty sad).
